Symptom

You can no longer access the back office of your Wordpress website via /wp-admin or /wp-login.php. Maybe you have forgotten your administrator password, maybe you have forgotten your user name.

Solution

You can enter a new password for the user dataset in the database that you are using for Wordpress. This workes even if you do no longer have access to the Wordpress back office. However, you must be able to access your MySQL database, e.g. by phpMyAdmin.

1. Log-in to phpMyAdmin on your database server. Please see your server installation mail for the access data to phpMyAdmin and the URL, where you can open phpMyADmin on your server.

2. Select your database.

3. Open the Wordpress datatabase table "wp_users".

4. Click on the "Edit" link next to the dataset that you want to edit. If you have forgotten your user name, you can also simply read the user names from the "user_login" field in this table.

5. From the drop down list of the field "user_pass" select the value "MD5". This function converts the new password that you are about to enter in the next step into an encrypted value that Wordpress understands.

6. In the field "user_pass" enter a new password.

7. Click the [OK] button below the dataset.

The new password is effective immediately.
